Swiss Watch Industry Association And Seco Sign Memorandum Of Understanding With Chinese Watch Industry

In accordance with the terms of the trade agreement signed by the Swiss Confederation and the People’s Republic of China on December 20, 1974, a memorandum of understanding on watchmaking was signed on May 24, 2013.
After the signing of the memorandum, a new communication platform and channel for the intellectual property protection of the Swiss and Chinese watch industry and mutual cooperation between the two parties have been established. During Premier Li Keqiang’s visit to Switzerland, on May 24, 2013, the Swiss Watch Industry Federation (FH) and the Swiss Federal Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) signed an understanding with the Chinese Watch Association and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology memorandum. The goal of this watch industry memorandum is to create a Quartet Working Group with the support of the Bilateral Joint Economic Commission established under the 1974 Trade Agreement. The signing of this memorandum has also paved the way for the signing of the China-Switzerland Free Trade Agreement in the coming months.
Like other similar organizations, the watchmaking working group aims to promote exchanges and cooperation between all parties. Its main purpose is to encourage the development of trade relations, protect intellectual property rights and appellations of origin, especially Swiss-made labels, and continue to combat counterfeiting and exchange of feedback. The working group can examine the specific issues facing the industry in Switzerland and China and make specific recommendations to resolve them. The working group is expected to meet at least once a year, in principle, consistent with the duration of the bilateral joint committee meetings.
The importance of the Chinese market to Swiss watches is self-evident, so the Swiss Watch Industry Federation (FH) finds it valuable to participate in the establishment of this working group. In fact, the latter will provide additional platforms where experts can better promote the interests of the Swiss watch industry. The Swiss Watch Industry Federation (FH) endorses the formation of a working group with the industry’s main trading partners.
